Tests to Diagnose Spinal Injury

Auto accidents are a major cause of serious neck and back injuries in Virginia. Hundreds of people suffer spinal injuries in Fairfax, Virginia car accidents and most often are rushed to the trauma unit at Fairfax Hospital Emergency Room.

Whenever a person is seen in the emergency room with symptoms suggesting an injury to the spine, physicians order the following tests to find the anatomical cause for the patient’s symptoms:

  • X-rays
Emergency physicians must always order x-rays as the first radiological test for a patient suspected of having a neck or back injury. X-rays show fractures, arthritis and tumors of the spine.

  • CT Scans
CT scans show fractures, arthritis and disc conditions in more detail than x-rays.

  • MRI
MRI shows, in three dimensions, the spinal cord, spinal arthritis, herniated discs, tumors and blood clots, all of which could compress the spinal cord.
